François Gomes, comic book artist and passionate illustrator

To dive into the world of François Gomes, comic book artist, is to encounter an artist who is passionate about images and imagination. A children’s illustrator, comic book author, and teacher at the Brassart school, François is one of those creators for whom drawing is second nature. Inspired by Japanese culture, nature, and human emotions, he is constantly exploring new graphic horizons. In this interview, he shares his career path, his inspirations, and his vision of the profession, which combines passion, transmission, and creative freedom.

Who is François Gomes, comic book artist?

Hello, I’m François Gomes, comic book artist, children’s illustrator, and teacher at Brassart, a school dedicated to video games and comic books.

I divide my time between creating, teaching, and passing on my passion to the next generation of artists.

How did François Gomes' passion for comic books begin?

Like many people, it all started in my childhood: I read comic books without imagining that it could become a profession. Then, as I kept drawing, I was asked to illustrate a story. Little by little, without realizing it, I became a comic book artist. It was a passion that naturally turned into a vocation.

Where does François Gomes get his inspiration from?

Inspiration from Japan to nature

My world is heavily inspired by Japan, particularly Miyazaki, but also by nature, walks in the forest, and biodiversity.

I also draw inspiration from other artists such as Loisel, Lanfust, and Peter Pan.

In reality, anything can fuel creativity: reading, landscapes, emotions…

Everyday life as a source of emotions

Yes, everyday life inspires me, but above all, it’s human emotions, relationships between people, small gestures, and sincere exchanges.

These are the moments that fuel my imagination and my art.

Why doesn't François Gomes limit himself to a single artistic medium?

It’s a personal choice.

Creating comics is great, but I have so many images and worlds in my head that I need to explore different media. Sometimes my illustrations feature dragons, creatures, or imaginary worlds, even if they don’t appear in my albums.

The inspiration of the moment guides my hand. And then, we mustn’t forget that even if it’s a job, it remains above all a passion: I need to create freely, for pleasure.

Which work is François Gomes most proud of?

Right now, I’m working on an album called “Le Secret des Libellules” (The Secret of Dragonflies), a project that is particularly close to my heart. But every album has been important at some point: when you make it, you’re happy with the result.

I don’t look back too much, because I always see the flaws: I prefer to focus on what I still want to create.
